Theme + artists for leaflet
Theme: street photography
For this task I will make a leaflet for an art gallery featuring three photographers that relate to a theme. My theme will be candid street photography.
I was originally going to choose Gunner Stahl for one of my options but I chose to brainstorm other artists instead as they related more to street photography. Gunner's work is more akin to portraits than street photography.
My three photographers are :
Henri Cartier-Bresson
William Eggleston
Shinya Arimoto
Much like the works of Cartier-Bresson and Eggleston, Shinya Arimoto shoots exclusively on film and features many candid street shots of everyday life in bustling Tokyo in his "Ariphoto" series (2006-now). He was awarded the Photographic Society of Japan's Lifetime Achievement Award.
They are similar to Cartier-Bresson's work as all the photos are in black and white and they all have a humanist theme, capturing everyday people in their normal every day environment. Most of these photos are also unstaged and candid.
His work is similar to Eggleston's as they capture cityscapes and the mundane nature of everyday life, but the fact that he captures a decisive moment in time makes it exciting and fascinating. His photos, although black and white, also have a very vibrant and bright feel.

Shinya Arimoto
Ariphoto series, 2006
This photo captures the gaze of a Tokyo policeman as he candidly looks towards the camera. We can sense the urgency of everyday life in Tokyo based on his expression and the movement of the other subjects in the background.
|
Very urgent feel to the photo, the movement of the subjects is captured by the slight tilt of the camera.
|
The emotion of the subject is captured intimately. The fact that he is on the edge of the photo leaning back creates a laid-back vibe, that reflects the demeanour of the subject in frame.

Henri Cartier-Bresson
1933
Spain, 1933, Madrid
The windows on the wall matches the composition of the boys down below. The large white all also helps make the windows look more striking, |
Spain, 1933, Seville
The framing of the children within a crack in the wall evoke a sense of danger. I also like the way the children are all in the middle of the photo, giving the photo a more focused feel. |
Italy, 1933, Tuscany
The wide and empty composition of the photo evoke a sense of isolation and also freedom as the subjects in the photo are far away from each other. |
William Eggleston
1970-73
Our attention is immediately drawn towards the boy in the photo, and his wind in the hair as well as the open door of the car evoke a sense of curiosity and freedom
|
The bright primary colours and the overlapping composition of the signs creates a chaotic but vibrant feel. It also offers a striking portrayal of corporate America
|
This photo prominently features the colours red and yellow. It is hard to find a street scene with shops with similar colours that compliment each other, so this photo is very aesthetically pleasing to look at.
